This is a vintage prayer wool rug made by Turkmen weavers in Afghanistan. It has beautiful, rich reds and navy colorings. The ends have a unique woven trim detail. It is extremely soft and while there is some fading its condition is consistent with its age and use. ~33.5” x 53”
The history of Turkmen rugs dates back to the 5th century AD, with the earliest known examples coming from the Sogdian period. These rugs were originally woven by the nomadic tribes of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and northern Afghanistan, who used them as floor coverings, tent decorations and saddlebags.
